Teacher of the Year Finalists 2005 - 2006

The Chesapeake Public Schools are proud to present their 2005 - 2006 Teachers of the Year. Each year, Chesapeake Public Schools conducts this special program to recognize outstanding classroom teachers from across the city. One person is chosen to represent their school as a finalist for the city-wide title of Chesapeake Teacher of the Year.

Laura Bowling - School: Butts Road Intermediate School - Grade:5th Years Teaching:14 - "Getting a good education is so important. I strive to help each one of my students to be successful in obtaining their education."

Deborah L. Cowling - School: Butts Road Primary School - Grade:2nd Years Teaching:12 - "Throughout my life, the educational and personal experiences I value and the people I admire most have taught me that the love of learning, love of children, and love of life can make things happen!"

Anthony Cass - School: G.W. Carver Intermediate School - Grade:5TH Years Teaching:5 - "Teaching is all about attitude. The attitude that I portray as a teacher, determines the atttitude that my students will display. Set high expectations and students will live up to them."

Caroline Higginbotham - School: Cedar Road Elementary School - Grade:1st Years Teaching:9 - "My elementary school teachers gave me worksheets to take home and “play school”. It was then that I knew I wanted to become a teacher. Now I know I have the best, most important job in the world!"

Susan Elizabeth Joseph - School: Chesapeake Alternative School - Grade:6th - 8th Years Teaching:5 - "I am still learning to teach as this is my fifth year. Teaching is a great deal like parenting, much harder and much more rewarding than anyone can convey with words."

Tiffany Manning Byrum - School: Chesapeake Center Sci & Tech - Grade:11th/12th Years Teaching:13 - "My goal is to teach students to learn, while laughing and growing personally. The most rewarding part of teaching is when students from previous years return to say thank you for everything I did for them."

Lisa Yvonne Young Lynch - School: E. W. Chittum Elementary School - Grade:5th Years Teaching:11 - "Knowledge is the key that opens the world's doors. Teachers have the awesome privilege of providing students with the tools they need to create their own key. Teaching is such an honor and a joy!"

Maggie Durham - School: Crestwood Intermediate School - Grade:5th Years Teaching:17 - “It is a privilege to have a career where I can inspire and encourage a love of learning and self. Teaching is all about the relationships I form with my students and helping them to discover their own greatness.”

Elaine B. Kehl - School: Crestwood Middle School - Grade:6,7,8 Years Teaching:27 - "I am very fortunate to be working with children. Everyday they bring warmth and laughter into my life. Since I am a speech therapist I am able to work with all grade levels and disabilities."

Sarah Fallon Bigbie - School: Deep Creek Central Elementary - Grade:K-5 Years Teaching:14 - "I love working with children and helping them realize their strengths and potential. The best part of my day is when a child greets me with a smile and a hug! There is no job better than teaching!"
