Congratulations to our 2015-2016 Teacher of the Year, Kristin Garman!

Meet our TOY and RTOY

We were able to sit down with G.W. Carver's 2015-2016 Teacher of the Year  and Reading Teacher of the Year to ask her a few questions. Read on to learn some more about Ms. Garman.

Where were you born?  I was born in Norfolk, but grew up in Portsmouth, VA and later moved to Renick, WV

How many years have you been teaching? This is my 8th year as a special education teacher. My first class of students are now in high school!!!

How many years have you been teaching in Chesapeake? I’ve been with Chesapeake for a  total of 10 years.  I worked my first two years as a special education teacher assistant with Pre-K -5th while I was getting my teaching license.

What is your favorite thing about teaching? My favorite part of teaching is when I get to work with struggling students … I love watching when the “light bulb comes on” and they FINALLY understand a difficult math concept or make improvements in their reading.  Their shining moments are the greatest reward!

What is your favorite thing about Carver? I truly love working with the students at Carver … but it just wouldn’t be the same without my colleagues and coworkers.  They are the most supportive, flexible, and hard-working people I’ve ever met.  Stacy Caylor (my teaching partner) has become one of my best friends!

Any other interesting information you would like to share with the Carver family?  Ms. Garman’s Top Five:

1- I love baseball and am a diehard NY Mets fan

2- I just finished my Masters of Education degree with an endorsement as a Reading Specialist … WOOHOO!!!

3- Brand new Sharpie markers make me extremely happy

4- My dog’s name is Maggie, and she’s a Bernese Mountain Dog

5- One of my favorite authors is Cynthia Rylant, because she is also from West Virginia
