School
Hours
Students
are required to be at school
no later than 8:10 a.m. each
day. Parents may
not drop students off at the
school any earlier than 7:50
a.m. each morning.
Students are dismissed at
2:39 p.m. and parents should
not pick up students before
that time. |
Dismissal
Dismissal
begins at 2:39 p.m. each
day. Parents who pick
up their child must report
to the front desk to sign
them out. Parents are not
to report to the
classroom. Please let
babysitters and day care
providers know when your
child is absent from school,
riding a bus home, or has
gone home early due to
illness. Students
will not be held back from
the buses or allowed to ride
a different bus home unless
there is a note from the
parent. |
Visitors
Visitors and
parents are encouraged to
visit our school. In
order to protect students,
staff, and property all
visitors are requested to
first report to the front
desk or main office to show
identification and receive
authorization to be on
school grounds.
Parents wishing to observe
or visit classes are asked
to first make an appointment
with the teacher.
Observations and visits are
limited to 30 minutes each
visit. |
Breakfast/Lunch
Chesapeake
Public Schools offers a
breakfast and lunch
program. The breakfast
program is scheduled to run
and not interfere with the
instructional program.
Students who want to eat
breakfast must report to the
cafeteria by 8:00 a.m.
Parents must complete a
Free/Reduced Lunch
Application to determine if
their children are eligible
for free or reduced breakfasts
and lunches. |
Parent
Teacher Association (PTA)
All parents
are asked to become members
of the PTA and to be an
active participant in their
child's education. the
PTA is a valuable
organization for the students,
parents, and staff.
They are responsible for
many of the fun activities
held at the school such as
the carnival, family fun and
fitness night, skate night,
and book fairs. |
Attendance
Because of
the amount of content
covered each day, it is very
important that students
attend school on time
everyday. Students
who are tardy or absent on a
regular basis will be
referred to the Truancy
Court through Juvenile and
Domestic Relations. Parents
should call the school the
night before or the morning
of the absence to inform the
school of the reason for the
child's absence. The
absentee line is 494-7507.
In addition, students must
bring in a note when
they return to school.
If a parent wants to get a
child's make-up work, the
teacher must be given
24-hour notice. |

must dress appropriately for
school. Students are not
allowed to wear tank
tops, spaghetti straps,
shirts showing the midriff

Homework/Grading

class each day and keeps the
parents informed of the
content that is
taught. Students will
have approximately 30 t 60
minutes of homework per
night.
Students
will be evaluated frequently
to determine their progress.
Evaluation will consist of
homework, classwork, tests,

Communications
Effective
education of children
requires cooperation between
home and school.
Parents are informed of
their child's academic
progress and social
development through the
weekly brown envelop,
Interim reports, and the
nine-week Progress
Reports. Special
parent bulletins and school
calendars are sent home
monthly to announce PTA
information, testing dates,
and other school
events. Our best
means of communication is
the "brown
envelope" sent home
each Thursday. |

Frequently
Asked Questions
Q:
What is the earliest my
child can arrive at school?
A:
Unfortunately we are not
able to accommodate students
who arrive to school prior
to 7:50 a. m. Please do not
drop students off prior to
this time. You will be
asked to stay with them
until supervision is
available.
Q:
What time should I pick up
my child from school?
A:
Parents who wish to pick-up
children in the afternoon
should be here no earlier
than 2:34 p.m. A photo ID is
required for parent
pick-up. Day care
providers should also be
present at 2:34 p.m.
Q:
How do I report my child's
absence?
A:
Please call 494-7507 between
3:30 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. to
report your child's
absence. State your
child's name, teacher's
name, and reason for
absence. Remember to
send a note to your child's
teacher when your child
returns to school.
Q.
Is it true that students
with repeated absences are
referred to Truancy Court?
A:
Yes. Schools are
required by the Code of Virginia
to enforce laws related to
truancy/non-attendance.
Students who have seven or
more unexcused absences are
referred to Truancy Court.
Q:
What is the teacher to
student ratio?
A:
It is approximately 1 to 20
or less for grade 3 and 1 to
24 or less for grades 4-5.
Q:
What is an inclusion class?
A:
An inclusion class is an
integrated class of regular
and special education
students. The special
education students
received services within
their regular class from a
special education
teacher. Generally,
the students do not
recognize who needs extra
help as the teachers work
collaboratively to
accommodate, remediate, and
enrich all of their
students.
Q:
Does the school offer
remediation for students in
need of extra help?
A:
Carver provides after school
remediation in math and
reading to students
identified with needs in
those areas. Students
are identified through
analysis of assessment data
including: previous year's
SOL scores, current year's
benchmark scores, math
checkpoint tests, current
grades, and formal/informal
teacher assessments.
Teachers usually identify
students for after school
remediation in the fall;
however, several sessions of
remediation are offered
throughout the school year
to accommodate
as many students
as possible.
Q:
How do I apply for free or
reduced lunch?
A:
Complete and return a Free
and Reduced Price School
Meals Application. It
is available in the school
office and cafeteria.
Q:
What services are available
for gifted students?
A:
Students identified as
gifted are grouped together
at each grade level.
Through differentiated
instruction provided in the
classroom, gifted students
have access to a
challenging, engaging
curriculum. Fifth
grade gifted students
attend the Laboratory School
for the academically gifted
one day a week.
