Reading
in the
Content Areas

In middle school, students are often overwhelmed by the amount of reading that is required in their classes.  Students discover that the text in their core classes (especially Science and History/Social Science) is difficult.
All students at Crestwood Middle School are taught reading strategies by the Reading Specialist.
To help your child read textbooks while at home, utilize the following strategies (which have been taught at school):

BEFORE
Reading I should...
  • Read the title and section headings
  • Look at pictures, charts, graphs, etc.
  • Predict what the reading will be about
  • Think about what I know about the topic
  • Think about how this relates to my life
During
Reading I should...
  • Stop and see if I can retell the section
  • Make guesses about what will happen next
  • Stop and see if my guesses are correct
  • Keep reading--even if I'm confused
  • Ask myself questions while reading
  • Answer my questions
  • Make mental pictures while reading
  • Use context clues to identify and define unknown words
After
Reading I should...
  • See if I met my purpose for reading
  • Retell the main parts
  • Reread passages that I still don't understand
  • Think about how the material can be applied to my life
