Concept-Based Curriculum

Students are provided with instruction in each of the core subject areas:  Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.  Students explore each subject area for nine weeks.  All instruction is based on the Virginia Standards of Learning.  Although fourth and fifth grade Standards of Learning are taught at the Lab School, students also have opportunities to explore age-appropriate material in the middle school and high school Standards of Learning.  This is one of the many ways we differentiate instruction for our students.

Each teacher at the Lab School writes a concept-based curriculum tailored to a particular subject area.  For the 2008-2009 school year, the Lab School is focusing on the concept of POWER.

Broad generalizations, relative to our concept, that encourage divergent and convergent thinking, are listed as follows:

  • Power enables us or others to overcome.

  • Power is the ability to influence.

  • Power evolves from knowledge.

  • Power may be used or misused.

  • Power may take many forms.
