Suggested Summer Reading 2010

All students at the middle school level are encouraged to read over the summer.  Literacy is a curriculum focus of the Chesapeake Public Schools, and we want to build good readers.  Our goal is that each student will read at least one work of fiction and one work of nonfiction during the summer.  To assist parents and students with the selection of appropriate materials, a Suggested Summer Reading List is provided and posted on each school’s website.

Lexile levels are listed with the titles to align selection with the student’s assessed reading level.  Lexiles (L) provide a common scale for measuring text difficulty and student reading ability.  Students who have completed a spring Reading SOL test will receive a Lexile score with their results.  Students who have taken a Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) prior to the end of the spring semester will have a more complete Lexile score to guide their book selection.  Students are encouraged to read books from 100L below their Lexile level to 50L above their Lexile level.

There is no assessment required with summer reading; however, during the 2010-2011 school year, students may have opportunities to utilize selections from summer reading to complete classroom activities.
