The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of 1,600 Black American high school seniors on September 30, 2009 who were designated Semifinalists in the 46th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program.

2009 Theatre State Competition
On Saturday, March 21, the GFHS Theatre Company traveled to Charlottesville, VA, for the VHSL AAA State Theatre Festival. Their production of "The Pearl" was outstanding! Two GFHS Actors received Best Actor Awards: Alex S. for his portrayal of Kino, and Courtney J. for her portrayal of Juana, and both actors were given the HIGHEST ratings in the festival.
In addition, the GFHS Theatre Company's production of "The Pearl" received FIRST PLACE IN THE STATE!!! The GFHS Theatre Company is Grassfield's FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM!!!!! Congratulations to all members of the Cast and Crew of "The Pearl." You've made history here at Grassfield!!!

2009 FBLA State Leadership Conference
Grassfield FBLA attended the State
Leadership Conference in Reston, VA over Spring Break.
Congratulations to Jay C., a senior, on his 1st Place victory in the
Impromptu Speaking event. Congratulations to Daniel B., a freshman
in our Technology Academy, on his 1st Place victory in the
Introduction to Technology Concepts category.
Both students advance to the Future Business Leaders of America's
National Leadership Conference this summer in Anaheim, CA.

Congrats to our
2009 Grizzly Wrestling Team

The Grassfield Wrestling team went undefeated with a 19-0 dual meet
record. We won the regular season district title defeating Great
Bridge (first loss since 2001) and the district tournament title
defeating Great Bridge and snapping a 24 year old winning streak. We
then went on to place 2nd in the Eastern Region and 4th in the AAA
State Tournament. At the state tournament we crowned 2 champions and
had 3 other wrestlers placing in the top 8.
Caleb Richardson - State Champion at 103lbs. - Grassfield's first
male state champion
Andrew Clement - State Champion at 171lbs.
Cole Louks - 5th place at 130 lbs
Kevin Mahoney - 5th place at 215lbs.
Tucker Spruill - 8th place at 160lbs.

Grizzly Swim Team
Six swimmers and divers
participated in the state swimming and diving meet this past weekend
at George Mason University. All swimmers swam personal best times.
Here are the individual honors:
Kelsey
Goodin dropped 8 seconds in the 500 freestyle giving her a junior
national cut
Kristen Zielinski dropped time in both the 100 fly and 100
freestyle.
Dylan Quinn swam a 23 flat in the 50 freestyle
Tim Johnson finished strong in the 500 freestyle.
Senior Evan Siebring qualified for finals placing 11th in the 100
freestyle.
James Wheeler finished 16th in the diving competition.

Technology Academy Grant
On February 27 the GFHS Technology Academy was awarded an Instructional Grant from the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation. Lisa Tworek wrote the grant proposal and was awarded a check in the amount of $450.00 to purchase a Smartboard Airliner. Mrs. Tworek currently teaches the ninth grade IT Fundamentals Technology Academy class. Congratulations Mrs. Tworek!!!

The Interact Club
sponsored the Get It Together Buckle Up challenge and GHS won first
place with 95.5% of our students buckling up! The Club won $400 to
be used towards safe school initiatives.
The After Prom Party Committee
won an Honor Roll award from the Virginia State Police Association.
This is presented to groups who sponsored safe, alcohol and drug
free all-night celebrations for after prom. There were 20 winners
from across the state with GHS being the only Chesapeake school to
win. The prize for being named a winner is a $500 donation to the
After Prom Party.
