Re:              Summer Reading Requirements for 2008 – 2009 School Year

As a student in the Honors program at Grassfield High School, you will interpret and analyze selected classic works from world literature, study and practice approaches to critical analysis, and focus on developing an individual writing style.  The goal is to make you a better reader and give you the intellectual resources you will need for college and adult life.

Also, as a participant in the program, you make a commitment to undertake what is required in the curriculum and Standards of Learning.

This document includes the summer reading requirements for the 11th grade Honors English course. Below you will find information on book requirements and choices – book titles and authors – AND the type of assessment students will complete as a response to those selections.*  The Dialectic Response Journal is due on the first day of class in September.  Assignment of Writing and Creative Expression assessments will be made within the first few weeks of the first marking period.

*Because of Block Scheduling, some students will be enrolled in Term 2 classes.  Nonetheless, those students must submit their Dialectic Response Journals (Tier 1 assessment) to their teacher on the first day of school in September.  Assignments for the Writing and Creative Expression assessments will be explained and assigned within the first few weeks of their second term class.  Students should review books read during the summer in January for success in their second term course.

Tier 1: Dialectic Response Journal

Students will

·   Focus primarily on character development as they move through the play. After choosing a character, students will write five (5) entries per act in which they analyze the character’s personality, motives, conflicts, actions and reaction, etc.

·      Offer substantial quotations which provide deep analysis, rather than focusing only on basic plot summary.

1 Contemporary Fiction/Nonfiction

Tier 3: Creative Expression

  • Grendel – John Gardiner

Within the first few days of class, students will be assigned a creative project for Grendel. This assignment will also be incorporated into the study of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf, which will be covered in Honors English 11. Examples of creative projects include group presentations, creating movies, writing and performing songs, and artistic expressions. The teacher will give directions for specific requirements when the assignment is given.

1 Classic Novel (choose)

Tier 2: Writing (Essay)

  • Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen
  • Dracula – Bram Stoker

Students will compose an essay in class which will focus primarily on the elements of the narrative. Students should concentrate on character analysis and theme while reading the novel.
