PTSA School of Excellence Survey

As we head towards the end of the school year, the Hickory High School PTSA will be resurveying the school community as the final step in evaluating our progress in the National PTA’s School of Excellence Program. Our goal this year was to develop a strong partnership among our families, school leaders, and community at-large, which is important for the success of our students and school. We hope to build our
partnership between the PTSA and Hickory High School to enrich the educational experience and overall well-being for all students.

VAPTSA Applauds Hickory PTSA's Commitment to School  

Chesapeake's Hickory High School PTSA, Southeastern District, stepped up to reopen and manage the school's store, the Hawks Nest! They cleaned out, repainted, organized and set up the entire store in a matter of weeks. A dedicated cadre of volunteers runs and maintains the store, open during all 3 lunch periods and special evening hours, like Open House, Band/orchestra performances and Sports Nights. Up and running since November 18th, the Hawks Nest is operating at a profit and has been enthusiastically received by parents, teachers and students.

PTSA president Elena Trotter states, "To have a daily presence at the high school highlights the many positive aspects of our PTSA and promotes a great partnership between school and family. It has become a source of pride at the Hickory High School."

The Virtual Instruction Program will be continuing and extending the Virtual Virginia Full-Time Online Pilot Program from the 2016-2017 school year.  Enrollment is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ryan Wieck - NFHS 2015 Mideast Sectional Coach of the Year

Congratulations to Ryan Wieck, Hickory High School softball coach, for receiving the 2015 Mideast Sectional Coach of the Year Award for the sport of softball. The mideast section includes the states of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) recognizes coaches at the state, sectional, and national level. Wieck is in his 19th season at Hickory High School with one state championship, five regular season district championships, four district tournament championships, and four eastern region championships. Congratulations, Coach Wieck!

Parking Application Instructions 2015 - 2016

  1. Seniors, Juniors, and eligible sophomores may purchase parking decals Wednesday mornings from 8:00am to 8:30am in room 108.

  2. Students may continue to submit applications through Friday, May 27, 2016.

  3. Students must provide the following information when purchasing a decal:

    a. Completed application (applications are located in the main office)
    b. Current Virginia's driver's license (unless active military dependent)
    c. Acknowledgment Statement signed by student and parent/guardian
    d. Copy of car insurance card
    e. $20 cash or check

  4. If you are experiencing difficulty with the applying online, please contact the school at 421-4295.

To participate in athletics at Hickory High School students must:


Have a physical dated May 1, 2015 or after.  This includes open gym, out of season practice and tryouts.  The original or a copy of the physical must be on file in the athletic office before a student participates in these activities.  There are no exceptions to this rule.


Register online in order to participate in athletics.  Online registration will consist of completing all of the necessary paperwork needed to participate in athletics (including forms you will be familiar with from previous years.) Athletes will be able to register beginning July 1, 2015. The web site to register is

Once athletes have registered online and turned in their current physical they will be eligible to participate in athletics.

Congratulations to Hickory High School for receiving the 2015 Board of Education Excellence Award! Hickory High met all state and federal accountability benchmarks and made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board.
