Dear Parents/Guardians,
Your son or daughter has enrolled
in an advanced English course (Honors, Advanced Placement, or
Dual Enrollment) for the approaching school year.
Chesapeake Public Schools’ current policy requires a
summer reading assignment for these students.
Attached you will find the appropriate assignment and
assessment activities for your child’s course selection.
While the number and title of books
to read varies with the grade level, all students will be
required to complete a designated activity for each book
before returning to school in the fall. These
assignments are due on the first day of school, September 2,
2008.
(Because this is a summer assignment,
students must turn in their summer reading assignments on the
first day of school, even if their Honors English
class is not scheduled until
second semester. Second semester students may turn
in their assignments to Ms. Kenneday in G-12.)
These graded assignments will be
factored in to the student’s term grade for the course.
Failure to complete the summer reading assignment will
significantly impact the student’s grade. After class
begins, students may be asked to complete one or more
additional activities from their summer reading.
Therefore, the summer reading assignment is an
important one for a successful start in the course.
Books for the assignments may be
purchased at local bookstores, on-line, new, or used.
Paperbacks are usually cheaper.
Books may also be checked out from the public libraries
if students do not wish to purchase the books.
We look forward to the opportunity
to work with your son or daughter in the advanced English
programs at Indian River High School.
Sincerely,
J. Kenneday
