Work and Family Studies

Family and Consumer Science  - Family and Consumer Science Studies are made up of two programs having two different objectives. These programs are Consumer Education with specialized areas, and Occupational Family and Consumer Sciences, including senior intensified courses. Students also participate in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), which is an integral part of each course. The Family and Consumer Science program prepares students for personal and family living and for earning a living.

Career and Technical  Education - This program is designed to help the student to prepare for successful employment. Instruction includes developing goals and values important for employment, occupational preparation, and human relations.

Family and Consumer Science

Nutrition and Wellness (931)

Course Description: Students enrolled in Nutrition and Wellness focus on making choices that promote wellness and good health; analyzing relationships between psychological and social needs; choosing foods that promote wellness; obtaining and storing food for self and family; preparing and serving nutritious meals and snacks; selecting and using equipment for food preparation; and identifying strategies to promote optimal nutrition and wellness of society. Teachers highlight the basic skills of math, science, and communication when appropriate in the course content.

 

Parenting (936)

Course Description: Students enrolled in Parenting focus on assessing the impact of the parenting role in society; taking responsibility for individual growth within the parenting role; preparing for a healthy emotional and physical beginning for parent and child; meeting developmental needs of children and adolescents; building positive parent-child relationships; using positive guidance and discipline to promote self-discipline, self respect, and socially responsible behavior; obtaining parenting information, support, and assistance; and planning ways that families and society can share in nurturing children and adolescents. Teachers highlight the basic skills of math, science, and communication when appropriate in the course content.

Introduction to Fashion Design and Marketing Occupations (930)

Course Description: The clothing and textile core focuses on clothing decisions, clothing budgets, clothing and textile projects, construction and repair of clothing, and textile products. Teachers highlight career development and careers related to clothing and textiles as well as the basic skills of math, science and communication.

Course Description: The food occupations competencies focus on identifying and exploring the individual careers within the food service industry. Units of study include food science and technology, dietetics and nutrition services, contemporary cuisines and service styles, food and beverage production and preparation, and food safety and sanitation. Teachers highlight the basic skills of math, science, and communication when appropriate in the course content.

Introduction to Housing, Home Furnishings, and Design Occupations (925)

Course Description: Students enrolled in Housing and Interior Design focus on the principles of design; design types and vocabulary; color theory; psychological and physiological aspects of color; cultural impact on the environment; decision making skills for housing and home furnishings; utilization of space; development of artistic skills; and environmental components such as lighting, accessories, energy conservation, furnishings and equipment selection. Teachers highlight career development and careers related to home furnishings and design as well as basic skills of math, science and communication.

Course Description: A continuation of Food Occupations I, the course allows students to work closely in assisting the classroom teacher and managing Food Occupation I students. There is a greater emphasis on career opportunities in the field of food preparation and service by exploring extended occupational functions while gaining greater knowledge and skills necessary for employment positions, higher education, and training for technical and professional positions.

Course Description: Students prepare for career opportunities in the field of food preparation and service by gaining knowledge and skills necessary for entry level employment, continued education, and training for technical and professional positions. Students focus on ensuring sanitation and safety standards; performing side work; serving food using a variety of service styles; using kitchen equipment; developing menus; preparing, processing, and producing foods; performing cashier functions; providing catering and banquet services; receiving and storing food and supplies; and managing the food service operations. Other areas of emphasis include employability and strategies for balancing the roles of worker, family member, and citizen.

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Education for Employment I (913)

Course Description: The Education for Employment Program (EFE) is designed to provide a practical way for students to acquire marketable skills while attending school. Emphasis is placed on social skills and knowledge gained through work simulation.

Education for Employment II (948)

Prerequisite:
Students must meet program criteria

Course Description: Continuation of EFE 1 with an emphasis on gaining technical skills, searching for and maintaining successful employment, balancing work and family roles, and contributing to the community.

Employment Plus (915)   Grade Level: 9-10   Credit: 3 Units
Prerequisite:
Students must meet program criteria. Testing and interview required.

Course Description: The purpose of Employment Plus is to provide certain students with an educational option in place of the completion of a traditional high school program. Employment Plus consists of three periods of directly related GED instruction and job-related skills. During the afternoon the student will be required to work a minimum of 15 hours per week.
