What is AVID?

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college preparatory program for middle and high school students.  AVID is an in-school academic support program that prepares students for college acceptance and success. AVID is for those students in the academic middle who may meet the following criteria: first in family to attend college, historically underserved in four-year colleges, low-income, or other special circumstances. These are students who have the desire and determination to go to college and are willing to work hard and take rigorous classes, including the AVID elective.

What is the AVID Elective?

AVID is a regularly scheduled class in middle and high schools.  The three main components of AVID are academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities.  In this class, students learn organization, critical thinking and study skills, and receive academic help from peers and tutors. Students also participate in enrichment and motivational activities.
