Our Admin Team Mrs. Alaina Britt, Principal

Mrs. Britt earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Education degrees from Old Dominion University, and a postgraduate degree in K-12 School Leadership from Regent University. She began her career in K-12 education as a school counselor at Hugo A. Owens Middle School over 15 years ago. Prior to returning home to her HOMS family, Mrs. Britt served as principal of Cedar Road Elementary School, and assistant principal at Grassfield High School, Deep Creek High School, and Hickory High School. Her other professional experiences include serving as an educational licensure exam rater, AdvancEd external review team member, collegiate academic advisor, and literacy outreach coordinator to low-income communities in Norfolk.

Mrs. Britt and her husband, Antwain, are the proud parents of four teenage children – Jasmyn, Kaylah, Jayden, and Antwain Jr. She firmly believes in providing the same high-quality education for her students as she would expect for her own children. Under that premise, she is committed to fostering the holistic development of ALL students to assist them in achieving their personal best. She is honored to serve the Hugo A. Owens Middle School community with a collaborative, student-centered, solution-focused approach, a spirit of excellence, and a heart of compassion.

Ms. Stephanie Horton, 6th Grade Assistant Principal

Ms. Horton is a proud product of Chesapeake Public Schools having graduated from Western Branch High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Studies/Elementary Education from Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, served on the Longwood Judicial Board, and mentored incoming freshmen. While at Longwood, Ms. Horton was recognized for academic excellence and for being a citizen leader. She earned her Master of Science in Education degree in K-12 Administration and Supervision from Old Dominion University. Ms. Horton began her career in education as a teacher at Western Branch Middle School in August of 2000. This position holds a special place in her heart as she began her teaching career working amongst teachers whom had made an impact on her life when she was one of the students sitting in their classrooms when it was a junior high school.

Ms. Horton then had the opportunity to be an original member of the Jaguar family having served as a teacher for seven years at Jolliff Middle School. Prior to coming to Hugo Owens Middle School as an assistant principal, she served as a Staff Development Specialist and Staff Development Administrator at the School Administration Building where she coordinated and provided training for teachers, administrators, and classified personnel. Her other professional experiences include serving as the South Hampton Roads Teacher Coordinator for People to People Student Ambassadors. While serving as a teacher leader, she was fortunate to have the opportunity to explore educational experiences in Australia, New Zealand, China, France, Italy, England, Belgium, Monaco, Malta, and the Netherlands. Ms. Horton believes that all students can learn and enjoys working collaboratively with students, teachers, and parents to ensure that our students are provided with the tools necessary to foster a path to success!

Mr. John Wecht, 7th Grade Assistant Principal

Mr. Wecht earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Elon University in 1993, Masters in Education of the Gifted from Norfolk State University in 1998, and an Education Specialist Degree in Administration and Supervision from The George Washington University in 2005. In the spring of 1996, he began his educational career at Crestwood Middle School and in the fall of 1996, he moved to the newly opened Hickory High School. While at HHS, he served as a Special Education teacher as well as the Junior Varsity, and Varsity Soccer coach for 8 years. In 2005, he was appointed as an Assistant Principal at HHS, and served the next 8 years in the position until arriving at Hugo A. Owens Middle in 2013. Mr. Wecht and his wife Leslie have two children Morgan, and Jack. During their weekends, you can find them organizing, cleaning, working in the yard, or sitting at a ball field.

Mr. Michael Dunbar, 8th Grade Assistant Principal

Mr. Dunbar is a product of the Tidewater area. He graduated from Indian River High School in 1992. He earned his bachelor degree in Fine Arts from Old Dominion University in 1999 and his master’s degree in Urban Education from Norfolk State University in 2004. He began his career as an Art Teacher in 2004, during which he was recognized as Teacher of the Year. Mr. Dunbar served as an assistant principal at Oscar Smith Middle for nine years until he moved to Hugo Owens Middle in 2013. He focuses on helping students realize their own potential and pushing them beyond their comfort zone not only academically, but also behaviorally. During his tenure in Chesapeake Public Schools he has worn many hats, including: step-coach, track coach, mentor, art curriculum writer, art teacher, assistant principal, summer school principal and muralist. Some of his murals can be found within several schools throughout the city.

Mr. Dunbar currently resides in Chesapeake with his wife Naomi, their two sons Jerald and MJ, along with their spoiled, but sweet, dog Maxx. He is a firm believer in building strong family bonds and giving back to his community. Mr. Dunbar crossed the burning sands of Kappa in 1993, and he is now a lifetime member of the noble clan of Kappa Alpha Psi Incorporated. KAY was founded upon the principle of ACHIEVEMENT in every field of human endeavor. A quote that he holds dear to his heart reads: “to accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.”
