Services Provided



Grades K-2: Portfolios are developed and maintained in kindergarten through second grade. Differentiated instruction is provided within heterogeneous classrooms.

Grade 2: Results from standardized achievement and ability measures administered to all students are used to develop a talent pool of potential candidates for gifted education. Parent and teacher checklists are coupled with school performance and portfolios to complete eligibility profiles. Direct referrals are sought from students themselves, teachers, school personnel, parents/guardians, community members, or others who may have knowledge of a student’s potential. Referral forms may be obtained at any time from school offices or from the Supervisor of Gifted Education at the Instructional Services Center (757.547.0153)

Grade 3: Identified students are clustered within third grade classrooms with teachers knowledgeable of the needs of gifted students. Curriculum is differentiated by content, process, and/or product. Concept-based curriculum is introduced.

Grades 4-5: Identified students are clustered within fourth and fifth grade classrooms with teachers certified in gifted education. Concept-based, differentiated instruction is provided. Students are exposed to a rigorous, accelerated, SOL-based curriculum incorporating Science and Math.

Grades 6-7: Identified students are ability grouped in gifted classes where concept-based curriculum is facilitated by trained teachers.

Grade 8: Eligible students will participate in honors courses in English, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign language. Enrichment opportunities are also offered after school.

Grades 9-12: Students are provided numerous opportunities for advanced study including honors, advanced placement (AP) in academic, visual and performing arts, technical arts, dual enrollment classes, Chesapeake Center for Science & Technology, Grassfield High School Technology Academy, Deep Creek High School Science & Medical Academy, The Governor’s School for the Arts, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Oscar Smith High School.
