Addition & Renovation Western Branch High School
June 28, 2010
The additions to the school consists of a two-story ninth grade addition on the south side of the existing building and two smaller additions (one to the music wing and the other for art and catering labs) on the north side of the building for a combined total of 70,000 additional square feet. In addition, the existing building (246,435 square feet) is being renovated in a multi-phased process over a two year period with the majority of this work being accomplished during the summer breaks. Renovations within the existing building include selective demolition, new casework, doors and hardware, bathroom renovations, painting, finish upgrades, technology upgrades, ceiling and lighting replacements and mechanical system replacements and modifications. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of November 2010. This project was awarded by the School Board to Blueridge General Inc., Contractors at the March 30, 2009, School Board meeting.
The contractor has completed the exterior work on the new 9th grade addition with the exception of the first floor window light shelves. The light shelves are scheduled to be installed after all the site work is completed. The contractor is pouring the new sidewalks around the 9th grade addition and expects this to be completed by the end of June. The final grinding of the terrazzo flooring and the installation of the VCT flooring is complete and the contractor continues applying the final coat of paint throughout the second floor. The permanent mechanical system is operational and the contractor has begun installing the acoustical ceiling tile. The lockers are being installed in the locker pods and the casework is being installed throughout the building.
On the Bruin Drive side of the building, School Plants is removing the portable classrooms with the expectation the Bruin Drive parking lot should be turned over to the contractor the first of July. The contractor will then begin the installation of the right hand turn lane, the milling of the asphalt and the installation of the additional parking spaces in this lot.
The summer renovation work has begun with the contractor setting the roof curbs for the new roof top mechanical units. Warehouse has removed the furniture and equipment from the technology, business, science, and health corridors. The contractor has begun removal of plumbing fixtures in the restrooms, the chalk and tack boards, and casework throughout the work areas. The contractor continues work in the auditorium, the ductwork is stored on the stage awaiting installation, all electrical conduits have been removed from the auditorium ceiling and new electrical conduit is being installed.
The project is currently seventy-five (75%) complete.
