English as a Second Language (ESL)
Chesapeake Public Schools provides an individualized tutorial program for students who do not speak English as their primary language. The goal of the program is for all English as a Second Language (ESL) students to become proficient in English and successful in the classroom.

Students are identified using the Home Language Survey at the time of enrollment. A diagnostic test is administered to determine whether the student qualifies for ESL tutorial services. Parents are notified of the test results and if the student can receive services.

Students will remain in their neighborhood schools. Each student is initially placed in an age appropriate grade level. An ESL tutor is assigned to work with or monitor the progress of the student. The tutor reinforces the Standards of Learning and utilizes the Virginia Department of Education’s English Language Proficiency Standards in instruction. The student may be pulled from class for up to one hour a day, five days a week for individualized instruction to support regular classroom instruction.

For further information, please contact Mr. Jack Hannon, Supervisor of ESL Services, 757-436-3316, fax 757-436-7736.
