Chesapeake Public Schools' Driver Education Program
The Department of Education approves Chesapeake Public Schools' driver education program. The Curriculum Guide for driver education contains 17 classroom performance indicators and The Standards of Learning Objectives serve as the conceptual framework. The Chesapeake School Board requires driver education as part of the tenth grade physical education and health course. Chesapeake Public School students must take the classroom portion of driver education but may elect to take the behind-the-wheel portion at their high school or at a commercial driving school. If a student elects to take behind the wheel at their high school a fee will be charged. Please contact your child's school for fee information.

The success of any driver education program depends upon the combined efforts of involved, concerned parents, qualified and dedicated teachers, responsible students, competent supervision, and appropriate equipment and facilities. Chesapeake Public Schools is very fortunate to have the resources to provide students with in-car instruction in a timely manner.

Chesapeake Public Schools has a Driver Education Parent/Guardian/Student Handbook that is given to each student at the beginning of the driver education portion of tenth grade health and physical education. It is very important that parents and students carefully read the handbook and direct any questions to the student’s driver education teacher.

Summer School driver education is available for public, private, and home-schooled students living in Chesapeake . Students must have completed 10th grade and have a learner’s permit. For more information, contact the supervisor of Driver Education’s office at 547-0153, extension 510155.
