Only
schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization are eligible
to offer the curriculum and to register candidates for examinations. IB diploma
candidates must be students in good standing at an authorized member school.
Over 1600 schools in 125 countries worldwide currently offer the Diploma
Program.
Schools
interested in joining the program conduct a self-study and receive counseling
through the appropriate regional office. The formal application includes an
on-site inspection visit and the submission of written documentation to IBO
headquarters in Switzerland. Schools must subscribe to certain criteria and
conditions for membership including
- Commitment to the promotion of international
understanding through education.
- Acceptance of the primary importance of the diploma
and the balanced academic program it represents.
- Acceptance of the central role of Theory of Knowledge
(TOK).
- Acceptance of the importance of the Creativity,
Action, Service (CAS) requirement.
- Emphasis on the personal development of students.
- Participation in support activities such as
professional training sessions and conferences for IB teachers and
administrators.
