The timeline for implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in Chesapeake includes the following highlights:

2000-2001
Application Phase

  • Publicity of the IB Program in the school division.
  • Identification of potential IB teachers for training.
  • Attendance at IB Application Phase conferences.
  • Visits to authorized IB schools.
  • Initiation of the self-study necessary for the IBO application.

Summer 2001: Development of course guides for implementation of the IB curriculum.



2001-2002
Application Phase

  • Development of Chesapeake’s Pre-IB Program.
  • Review of media center and laboratory acquisitions necessary.
  • Additional visits to authorized IB schools.
  • Development of master schedule for the first diploma class.
  • Recruitment of students in Grade 8 at Chesapeake middle schools.
  • Plan for busing of pre-IB students to Oscar F. Smith High School.
  • IBO authorized training for pre-IB 9 teachers.
Submission of school application to the IBO by June 1, 2002.

 

2002-2003 (The first diploma class is in Grade 9.)
Affiliation Phase

  • On-site visit by the International Baccalaureate North America inspection team.
  • Implementation of recommendations of the visiting team.
  • Pre-IB instruction at Oscar F. Smith High School for 50 potential candidates in Grade 9.
  • Recruitment of students in Grade 8 for second diploma class.
  • IBO authorized training for pre-IB 10 teachers.

 

2003-2004 (The first diploma class is in Grade 10.)
Affiliation Phase

  • Final planning for implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (Grades 11 and 12).
  • Pre-IB instruction for potential candidates in Grades 9 and 10.
  • Recruitment of students in Grade 8 for third diploma class.
  • IBO authorized training for teachers of Grade 11 IB courses.

 

2004-2005 (The first diploma class is in Grade 11.)
Participation Phase  

  • IB instruction for candidates in Grade 11.
  • Pre-IB instruction for students in Grades 9 and 10.
  • Recruitment of students in Grade 8 for fourth diploma class.
  • IBO authorized training for teachers of Grade 12 IB courses.

 

2005-2006 (The first diploma class is in Grade 12.)
Participation Phase

  • Registration of candidates in Grade 12 for IB examinations.
  • IB instruction for candidates in Grades 11 and 12.
  • Pre-IB instruction for students in Grades 9 and 10.
  • Recruitment of students in Grade 8 for the fifth diploma class.
  • First diploma class graduates.
