HONORS MUSIC PROGRAM ENTRANCE EXAM
STUDENT INFORMATION

Thank you for your interest in the Honors Music Program. We are pleased to offer rising 11th- and 12th-grade band, chorus, and orchestra students the opportunity to receive weighted credit (.25) for their participation in certain advanced performance classes. Your teacher should have already distributed information regarding honors credit for music classes to all interested and eligible students. The selection process for next year's program will take place in the coming weeks at each of our six high schools.

Applicants for the 2003- 2004 Honors Music Program will take a music theory entrance exam on May 28. The score received on the exam will comprise 30% of the student's total selection score. The following items and concepts will be included on the exam.

Written Portion
  • Time Signatures
  • Basic Note and Rest Rhythmic Values
  • Key Signature Identification (major keys only)
  • Basic Musical Vocabulary (tempo, dynamics, expressive markings)

  • In some cases, you will apply your knowledge of the items listed above, not merely identify them.

    Aural (Listening) Portion
  • Rhythmic Dictation in a Multiple Choice Format (you will choose the correct notation of what is played)
  • Melodic or Rhythmic Error Identification (given a line of notation, you will identify an error made when it is played)
  • Major and Minor Tonalities (you will distinguish between major tonality in hearing selected scales and chords)

  • Thank you, again, for your interest and... GOOD LUCK!!
