Teaching
in the Chesapeake Public Schools
There
are more than twenty-five hundred very special people who
work in Chesapeake each day to improve the quality of life
for Chesapeake students and to prepare these students for a
bright and successful future. These people are the
teachers of the Chesapeake Public Schools.
All Chesapeake teachers are licensed under the authority
of the Virginia Board of Education. Approximately
one-half of Chesapeake's teachers hold advanced degrees.
The school board supports professional growth and provides
opportunities for teachers to continually update their
professional knowledge and skills. Additionally,
teachers are compensated with an annual supplement for those
holding a master's degree, a certificate of advanced study,
and a doctorate. (See
Teacher Salary Schedule.)

Citywide
and individual school programs provide staff development for
teachers in the Chesapeake public school system.
Teachers may elect to take courses for license renewal or to
pursue advanced degrees at excellent universities in close
proximity to the Chesapeake area. Institutions
offering such educational opportunities include Old Dominion
University, Norfolk State University, Hampton University,
The College of William & Mary, Christopher Newport
University, Virginia Wesleyan College, Regent University,
and various other state institutions with extension programs
in the Hampton Roads area.
Chesapeake also offers programs aligned with local
universities for its teachers wishing to become school
administrators. Chesapeake has a mentoring program
for first-year teachers and conducts an informative
orientation program prior to the opening of school.
Numerous in-service programs are offered yearly within the
school system.
Teachers in Chesapeake are viewed with high regard.
Equipped with a superb education and demonstrating a
willingness to do their best, teachers in the Chesapeake
Public Schools are a source of pride for the school system
and the city. The Chesapeake school teacher is a
professional who makes a difference in the future of the
city and in the lives of students.
