In 1995, Chesapeake Public Schools began using a school improvement planning process to involve
stakeholders in setting long-range goals for the school division. More than 300 individuals participated
in the development of a five-year plan focused on seven goals: ensure school safety, ensure rigorous
educational standards, evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of what we do, strengthen staff training,
integrate technology, broaden community involvement, and provide adequate school facilities.
The result of the planning effort was a five-year division school improvement plan comprised of 178
recommendations divided over five phases for implementation.
The recommendations were implemented in the
form of "action plans" during the time frame of 1996-2001.
Once again, in 2001-2002, stakeholders participated in the school improvement planning process to develop
a second five-year division plan. Some revisions were made to the components of the original plan (i.e.,
Beliefs, Mission Statement, Objectives, and Strategic Goals) and 77 new recommendations were developed. On June 10, 2002, the School Board approved the 2002-2007 School Improvement Division Plan and implementation
of the Phase I action plans began in July 2002. The division is
on schedule to have the current school improvement plan fully
implemented by the summer of 2007.
