Each year, Chesapeake Public Schools sponsors the division’s Special Games. This event provides approximately twelve hundred students with disabilities the opportunity to showcase their personal strengths and athletic talents.
All students with an active Individual Education Plan are eligible to participate in a variety of track and field events. Field events include the basketball, frisbee, and softball toss, the standing long jump, and the kickball kick. Track events range from the 50 meter and 100 meter run and walk to the 10 meter assisted walk, and the 10 meter wheelchair race. Students participate in at least one track and one field event according to their individual ability level.
Mr. Paul Joseph, principal of Oscar F. Smith High School, has generously hosted the Special Games since 1996. The Beard DeLong Easley Field is the perfect location for our students to showcase their athletic talents and abilities. Oscar F. Smith’s athletic director, Todd Parker, also assists with making this event successful.
Chesapeake Public Schools employees contribute to the success of the Special Games. A special thank you to the following departments for their time, support and dedication to making the Special Games a spectacular event:
