Military
Families & IEP
Q: Are transitioning
military children, moving into the school system, eligible for enrollment
and participation in special programs?
A: Yes, transferring students who have a current IEP are
eligible to receive special education and related services.
Q: What is the proper procedure to apply for specialized services concerning
disabled children?
A: If the student has not been served previously
in special education, he/she should be referred to the Child Study
Committee (CSC) in his/her home school. If the CSC requests a formal
evaluation, parent permission must be obtained prior to any type of
assessment. Once the evaluation is completed, the case will come before
an eligibility committee to determine if the student is eligible for
special education services. If the student is found eligible, an IEP
(Individualized Education Program) will be
written for special education services. Services may begin once the parent has signed
an agreement for the IEP.
If the student transfers into the school division with a current IEP,
the parent should inform the school that the student was receiving special
education services and provide the school with a copy of the student's IEP
and any prior completed evaluations.
For further information regarding the
special education process, contact the Director of Special Education at
(757) 494-7600.
Q: Are your schools handicap accessible?
A: The Chesapeake Public Schools division adheres to the American Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for program
accessibility. Special requests should be made through the school's principal.
