The
Chesapeake Public Schools 2004 – 2005 Preschool
Convocation, held at the Chesapeake Conference Center in
Greenbrier on September 2nd, brought faculty, teachers and
staff together to reflect on a single purpose: Our
Children. |
Speakers Randolph Nichols [Superintendent], Dalton S. Edge [Mayor], Thomas L. Mercer [School Board Chairman] and Richard Babb [Coordinator of Broadcast Communications] addressed this year's theme “Remembering The Reason: Our Children”.

Carolyn Myers, a member of the Convocation Committee and Supervisor of Music Education for Chesapeake Public Schools, coordinated musical talents from around the school system. After an impressive presentation by the Deep Creek High School Air Force Jr. ROTC, the audience was graced by the singing talents of Ms. Janeene Bland.

|
| Janeene dazzled the audience with her performance of 'What About the Children' by BeBe Winans. In her spare time, Janeene also performs
at the Kempsville Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach. In addition to singing, she teaches Kindergarten at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, serves on the Staff and Community Committee, is currently attending graduate school for a degree in Administration and is Grade Chairperson for her school.
Carolyn Myers explained in her interview that choosing Janeene to sing was obvious.
“I first heard Janeene sing at the 2003 2004 New Teacher Conference and was convinced that she should perform at this years Convocation.” – Carolyn Myers

Janeene explains that her mother has been a large influence in many aspects of her life including singing.
“My mother prompted me to sing "What About The Children" to express the true passion felt by teachers everywhere including myself. A big thank you to all of the faculty, staff and administration of Chesapeake Public Schools for the encouragement and thoughtfulness you have shown me. A teacher working in this school system really knows how it feels to be part of a large family.” - Janeene Bland
When asked what message she would like to send to all aspiring young singers Janeene's response is, “Sing for all the right reasons”.
Adding to the musical talents this year, the 2004-2005 All-City Sixth Grade Choral Ensemble performed 'Can You Hear Me?' by Bob Chilcott. An ensemble comprised of teacher recommended students from the All-City sixth grade Chorus performed this crowd-pleasing harmony.
Next year faculty, teachers, and staff can expect the return of the Faculty Jazz Band in the 2005 - 2006 Convocation.
Carolyn Myers commented, “It would be nice to see a highlight of special student and employee music talents next year”. |
