WELCOME AND GENERAL INFORMATION

Substitute teachers are important members of the Chesapeake Public Schools instructional team. Each year when the regular teacher is absent, substitute teachers provide thousands of hours of instruction and supervision for our students.

Recognizing that well-qualified, well trained substitute teachers are an integral part of maintaining a strong instructional program, Chesapeake Public Schools requires that applicants have a minimum of thirty (30) hours of college credit and that they attend an initial orientation and an annual in service.

We maintain a list of 1,000 -1,200 substitute teachers to provide classroom coverage to approximately 39,000 students. Applications for substitute positions are accepted daily; orientations are scheduled regularly throughout the year. Substitute applicants who have completed applications (includes three (3) completed references), negative results of a tuberculosis test, proof of citizenship and a clear background check are invited to an orientation. Applicants fingerprinted after July 1, 1012 will be charged a fee of $37.00 for fingerprinting (certified check or money order only). All approved substitute teachers are added to our automated absence management system - SubFinder. After attending orientation and registering with the SubFinder system, substitutes can "shop" for or be called to fill absences for Chesapeake Public School instructional staff. Approval to substitute for the Chesapeake Public Schools should not be interpreted to mean full time employment - substitute teachers are "on call employees" and the amount of work available varies depending on the number of absences, availability and flexibility to work in different schools/positions.

A substitute teacher is the person responsible for the learning, safety, and well-being of students during the time he/she is assigned to a given classroom. Substitute teachers are expected to dress and act professionally. Only individuals that hold a current valid substitute teacher certificate (renewed annually - issued by the Department of Human Resources) and who are active in SubFinder may work. The Department of Human Resources (547-0001 or 547-0153) provides assistance to applicants seeking approved status or to current substitutes who have questions about their current status.
