GPA Requirement

As you know, the 2.0 grade point average (GPA) for Chesapeake Middle School League (CMSL) and Virginia High School League (VHSL) athletic and academic activities for student-athletes was suspended for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years. All other CMSL and VHSL eligibility requirements remained in place. Beginning in the fall of 2022, the 2.0 GPA requirement for CMSL and VHSL student-athletes will be reinstated.

Therefore, all student-athletes who participate on a VHSL or CMSL sponsored athletic or academic team must meet the 2.0 GPA requirement. The 2.0 GPA calculations will first be determined using either the last semester grades for high school students and the last nine weeks grades for middle school students. If the students’ last semester grades for high school or last nine weeks grades for middle school do not meet the 2.0 GPA requirement, the overall cumulative GPA will be used to determine eligibility.

In the fall of 2022, student-athletes must establish a 2.0 GPA prior to the first semester for high school athletic participation or prior to the first nine weeks for middle school athletic participation. All high school student-athletes will be eligible for a probation period starting in the spring semester of 2023, if necessary. All middle school student-athletes will be eligible for a probation period starting the second nine weeks of 2022, if necessary.
