Audience

School programs are available to public and private schools in Hampton Roads as well as organizations.

Capacity

The planetarium seats 110 students.

Program Length

Program times are limited with daily programs beginning at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., or 12:30 p.m. The 9:30 a.m. time is often reserved for Chesapeake Public School district. School programs last approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour based on student involvement.

Program Topics

School programs are based on the Virginia SOL’s for each grade level. These programs are different from the public programs presented during the evening hours.

School programs are available on the following topics for grades 1 – 6

Note: All school programs cover the current night sky and the planets visible. All programs contain stories (Mythology) of the seasonal night sky.

  • Grade 1:

    • A basic program including an introduction to the night sky  and a tour of the solar system.

  • Grade 2:

    • A basic program including an introduction to the night sky with a focus on the Earth and its moon.  Other planets in the solar system are briefly discussed.

  • Grade 3:

    • A more comprehensive solar system tour with focus on the Earth and phases of the Moon and eclipse cycles.

  • Grade 4:

    • This program covers the interactions of the Earth, Moon and Sun. Moon phases are demonstrated along with solar and lunar eclipses. Program covers the history man’s journey to the Moon.

  • Grade 5:

    • Brief solar system survey with a focus on the Earth and the forces of change. Geological history of Earth is covered.

  • Grade 6:

    • Focus on the origin of the solar system as part of a vast universe. The evolution of stars and planets is presented based on scientific theory.

  • Other Grades:

    • The planetarium programs are designed mainly for grades 1 – 6 but programs for other grades through university level are available. Contact the Planetarium Office by calling (757)-547-0153 for additional information
