The Virginia Department of Health outlines immunization requirements for schools in Virginia in accordance with 🌐Virginia Code § 22.1-271.2, § 32.1-46.


Immunization Requirements for students in grade 7 and 12

In the state of Virginia, three vaccines are required for all students entering grade 7: 

  1. Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (TDaP)

  2. Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY)

  3. Human Papillomavirus (HPV)* (dose 1)

Two vaccines are required for all students entering grade 12: 

  1. Meningococcal ACWY vaccine (MenACWY) (administered after the student’s 16th birthday)

  2. Human Papillomavirus (HPV)* (dose 2)

*Note: After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent/guardian, at their sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine. VA Code 32.1-46.

Documentation of these immunizations must be submitted before the first day of class or the student will not be permitted to attend.

Immunization reports can be submitted via ParentVUE/ OLR Online Registration/ Document Uploads. Without required vaccinations, students will not be permitted to attend school. If your student still needs the immunizations, please schedule an immunization appointment as soon as possible!

We encourage families to reach out to their Pediatrician or Primary Care Provider to discuss any questions about vaccines or to schedule an appointment for a vaccine. If your child does not have a health care provider, the following resources are available in our community.

  1. LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT
    🔷If you have questions about the vaccine or want to schedule an appointment, please contact the Chesapeake Health Department at 757-382-8631. Please be advised that immunizations are by appointment only, and there is limited availability.


    🔷If your child does not have a healthcare provider, you can find a Vaccines for Children provider at https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/immunization/vvfc/locatevvfcprovider/. These providers are also able to administer free vaccines to persons who are not able to pay.

  2. SCHOOL-DAY CLINICS
    🔶Chesapeake Public Schools is partnering with the Chesapeake Health Department to host a series of immunization clinics during the school day in six of our schools. Families with students who still need required vaccinations will receive direct messaging (text/email) to notify them of this special opportunity. School-day clinics will be held at the following schools (listed in calendar order) -

    Many local pharmacies offer immunization appointments. Check their website or ask the pharmacist!
