VMEA Designation

This Music and Fine Arts Month, we are proud to honor the incredible achievements of our students and directors across Chesapeake Public Schools. Ten schools earned the prestigious Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) Blue Ribbon Award, the highest honor for a school’s music department. This distinction is awarded to schools whose top-performing ensembles in band, orchestra, and chorus all receive Superior ratings in the same academic year. Join us in congratulating Grassfield High, Great Bridge High, Great Bridge Middle, Hickory High, Hickory Middle, Indian River High, Jolliff Middle, Oscar Smith High, Western Branch High, and Western Branch Middle!

Our district also celebrated outstanding results from the recent District IV Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors' Association and Virginia Choral Directors' Association Concert Assessments. Across 82 performances, our programs earned 69 Superior ratings, 30 for chorus, 20 for band, and 19 for orchestra, reflecting months of disciplined practice, exceptional leadership, and a community that values the arts.
