Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares students for successful entry into the workforce and postsecondary education with a strong focus on technical skills, practical theory, and workplace readiness skills. In addition, CTE helps students see the connection between what they are learning and employers’ needs in the workplace.

CTE provides a critical pathway to success for high school students and offers them opportunities to personalize their education based on their career interests and unique learning styles. CTE courses and programs prepare students for careers in current and emerging professions.

Early career exploration through CTE courses at the middle school level includes course opportunities in Technology Education, Family and Consumer Science, and Computer Science courses. At the high school level, opportunities to explore careers of interest while learning technical and employability skills that integrate into or complement their academic studies. Many high school CTE courses align with postsecondary programs of study or additional training after high school, which may include more specialized technical instruction. These pathways can culminate into postsecondary degrees, certificates, apprenticeships, or employment.

Industry Credentials

Education and work-related credentials are important milestones for many individual career pathways. Students have the opportunity to earn credentials that verify skill mastery, educational attainment, and the authority to perform a task or operation – conveying real economic benefits in the labor market. Credentials are also valuable to employers, allowing them to determine the skill or education level of job applicants without having to perform an assessment for each one.

A credential can be defined as a verification of an individual’s qualification or competence issued by a third party with the relevant authority to issue such credentials. The term credential encompasses educational certificates, degrees, certifications, and government-issued licenses.

Career and Technical Education Advisory Council (CTEAC)

The Career and Technical Education Advisory Council (CTEAC) is made up of a group of representatives in our local school division, and post-secondary collegiate, business, and workforce partners, including parent and student representatives. The purpose of the advisory board is to provide assistance, feedback, and approval of the operations, initiatives, and direction for all of our CTE programs in Chesapeake Public Schools.
