The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on the Educational Opportunity for Military Children recently awarded Butts Road Primary (BRP), G.W. Carver Intermediate (CAR), and Portlock Primary (PORT) the Purple Star designation for the 2023-2024 award year. This is the second consecutive time each of the three schools have earned Purple Star status. As a result, our district retains 100% Purple Star status!

The VDOE press release lists all 110 public and private schools that earned the “Purple Star” designation for the 2023-2024 award year. Of these 110 schools, BRP, CAR, and PORT were among the 29 schools who were second time recipients of the distinction. The Purple Star designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated their commitment to meeting the needs of military-connected students and their families.Since 2018, VDOE and The Council have provided 569 awards to deserving schools across Virginia. Of these, 360 have maintained an active designation and 148 have received the designation twice.  Purple Star schools retain the designation for three years before being required to reapply.
