2024 Citywide Chesapeake Teacher of the Year is Alyssa May!

Mrs. Alyssa May has been selected as the Chesapeake Public Schools Teacher of the Year. Mrs. May is an incredible second-grade teacher at Butts Road Primary who brings a wealth of knowledge to her classroom. She implements various hands-on and experiential lessons, where every day becomes an exciting exploration for her students! Alyssa is well-versed in handling project-based learning units, making her classroom an engaging hub of creativity. Reflecting on her journey, she shares that her passion for teaching was ignited by the influence of great teachers during her own school days, and she keeps that spark alive by aiming to create the same positive experience for her students. Alyssa is an inspiring educator who enriches the lives of those around her! Congratulations, Alyssa May!

The Chesapeake Educational Foundation presented Alyssa with a $1000 gift card, and she will be the district’s nominee for the 2024 Virginia State Teacher of the Year program. Congratulations, Alyssa May! 

2024 Elementary School Teacher of the Year is Chelsea Nash!

Mrs. Chelsea Nash has been selected as the Chesapeake Public Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year. Chelsea is a phenomenal 4th-grade teacher at Deep Creek Elementary, and her philosophy centers on the power of strong relationships in fostering student engagement and motivation, a belief that has earned her well-deserved recognition. Hailing from Hickory High School and beginning her teaching career in Savannah, Georgia, Chelsea has continued to excel, earning a master's degree from Georgia Southern University with the Childhood and Exceptional Student Education's Service and Leadership Award. Recognized for her effective use of technology in the classroom, she also received the Southside Virginia Regional Technology Consortium's Technology Teacher Award. Beyond her teaching role, Chelsea actively contributes to Deep Creek Elementary, serving on various committees, acting as Grade Level Chair and SCA Co-Chair, mentoring new teachers, volunteering as a coach, and more! Congratulations, Chelsea!

2024 Middle School Teacher of the Year is Kathy Mustain!

Mrs. Kathy Mustain has been selected as Chesapeake Public Schools Middle School Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Mustain is a remarkable Health & PE Teacher at Chesapeake Virtual Academy! Boasting an impressive 31 years of experience, with 20 dedicated to Chesapeake Public Schools, Kathy stands as a true education champion. Renowned for her empathy and compassion, she supports her students with love and sets high expectations. Kathy firmly believes that "once a student believes in themselves, anything is possible!"  In addition to her teaching prowess, Kathy has transformed the Hickory Field Hockey program into a championship powerhouse, securing numerous division and city championships. Such is her impact that the Hickory Middle School field hockey field proudly bears her name. Congratulations, Kathy Mustain!

2024 High School Teacher of the Year is Maurice Frazier!

Dr. Maurice Frazier has been selected as Chesapeake Public Schools High School Teacher of the Year. Dr. Frazier is an esteemed technology teacher at Oscar Smith High School, who possesses both a master's and doctorate degree from Old Dominion University. Maurice goes above and beyond to inspire and guide students on their academic journey. His commitment extends to serving as a mentor teacher and adjunct professor at ODU, alongside being a curriculum developer with the Virginia Department of Education in technology education. Notably, Maurice recently authored and published his inaugural book, "All About the FUN: Improving Yourself and Helping Others." His outstanding contributions have garnered him The Distinguished Technology and Engineering Professional Award (DTE) from the International Technology and Engineering Education Association in 2016.
