2026 Citywide Chesapeake Teacher of the Year is Susan Ratz!
Mrs. Susan Ratz has been selected as the 2026 Chesapeake Public Schools Teacher of the Year! For six years, Susan “Sue” Ratz has been a steady, compassionate force at B. M. Williams Elementary, serving English Learners in grades K–5 and ensuring every child feels seen, supported, and valued. More than an exceptional educator, Sue is a relentless advocate who removes academic, social, and personal barriers to student success by partnering with families, collaborating closely with colleagues, and helping connect students to essential resources. Her leadership through kindness earned her the Virginia Department of Education’s 2025 Ambassador of Kindness Award, a fitting reflection of the way she leads with heart every single day. Known as a trusted mentor, collaborative teammate, and unwavering ally to both students and staff, Sue exemplifies the very best of our profession and the values we strive to model across Chesapeake Public Schools.
The Chesapeake Educational Foundation presented Sue with a $1,000 gift card, and she will be the district’s nominee for the 2026 Virginia State Teacher of the Year program. Congratulations, Sue!
2026 Elementary School Teacher of the Year is Alexis Bruggeman!
Ms. Alexis Brueggeman has been selected as the Chesapeake Public Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year. Alexis is a phenomenal 4th-grade teacher at Hickory Elementary. An Old Dominion University graduate, Alexis has dedicated the past nine years to inspiring students and bringing learning to life through creativity, innovation, and technology integration. Known as a “memory maker and confidence planter,” she nurtures self-confidence in every student while making lessons engaging and meaningful. Alexis is also a collaborative leader, serving as grade-level chairperson, social studies point of contact, and a mentor to her colleagues. Her dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to student success make her an outstanding educator and a truly deserving recipient of this honor. Congratulations, Alexis!
2026 Middle School Teacher of the Year is Michael Powers, Jr.!
Mr. Michael Powers, Jr. has been selected as Chesapeake Public Schools Middle School Teacher of the Year. Mr. Powers is an 8th-grade math teacher at Crestwood Middle School. A proud graduate of Indian River High School and Old Dominion University, Michael has spent the past eight years transforming how students engage with math, helping them build confidence, resilience, and a love for learning. Known for his innovative teaching, hands-on projects, and technology integration, he creates an environment where every student can succeed. Beyond the classroom, Michael is a dedicated mentor and community advocate, founding the Falcon Forge Mentorship Program and actively participating in school events and initiatives. His leadership, passion, and unwavering commitment to students make him an outstanding educator and a well-deserving recipient of this honor. Congratulations, Michael!
2026 High School Teacher of the Year is Dr. Christopher Fischer!
Dr. Christopher Fischer has been selected as Chesapeake Public Schools High School Teacher of the Year. Dr. Fischer teaches AP Government and Politics at Western Branch High School. With 30 years of teaching experience and a PhD in Education from Old Dominion University, Dr. Fischer inspires students to explore government, philosophy, history, and civic engagement through thought-provoking discussions and hands-on learning. Known for building authentic relationships, he empowers students to think critically, voice their opinions, and embrace challenges. Beyond the classroom, he serves as Youth in Government sponsor, boys tennis coach, and mentor, enriching the Bruins community through countless extracurricular activities.
