Supporting Student Success: Standards of Learning (SOL) Expedited Retakes

Chesapeake Public Schools is pleased to share an optional opportunity for students in grades 3 through 8 to participate in the Standards of Learning (SOL) Expedited Retake process. This program is designed to give students a second chance to demonstrate their academic growth before the school year concludes.

What is an Expedited Retake?

If a student does not pass their first SOL attempt but meets specific criteria, they may be eligible to retake the assessment after receiving additional support. This is entirely optional; it is a resource available to families, not a requirement.

Key Benefits of a Retake

  • Academic Record: A passing score on a retake will replace the previous failing score on the student's record.

  • No Risk: Choosing not to retake the test—or failing to pass the second attempt—will not negatively impact a student's report card grade.

  • Preparation: Schools will provide tutoring or remedial instruction to help students feel confident before their second attempt.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this second opportunity, a student must meet the following three requirements:

  1. Course Grade: The student must currently have a passing grade in the subject being tested.

  2. Initial Score: The student’s first attempt must have resulted in a score between 375 and 399.

  3. Parental Consent: Written or digital permission from a parent or guardian is required.

How to Provide Consent

We encourage all families to complete the permission form in advance. Providing consent now ensures that if your child becomes eligible, the school can provide support and schedule the retake quickly.

Please note that you have the right to change your decision at any time prior to the retake by notifying the school in writing.
