Attendance Waiver Information

  • Attendance in high school is counted by individual class and not by an all-day attendance code.

  • To receive credit for high school classes, the VDOE requires that students have not only a passing grade in a course (63.5+), but also a minimum amount of “seat time” in a class.

  • Students can miss up to 9 days in each semester-long class.

  • Students only need to apply for a waiver if they have more than the allowable number of absences.  Students may not exceed

    • 9 absences in each 1-credit semester-long class

    • 9 absences in each year-long, alternating-day class

    • 18 absences for each year-long, 2-credit class

  • Students and parents can check attendance by class in StudentVUE or ParentVUE by going to the attendance tab and hovering the mouse over the bar next to the class name. See the screenshot below. Parents, if you do not have access to ParentVUE, contact your child’s guidance counselor.  For immediate access, ask your child to show you StudentVUE on his/her Chromebook.

StudentVUE Attendance

  • If your child has more than the allowed number of absences in any of his/her Semester 2 classes and you have documentation or extenuating circumstances to support why your child was absent, please complete and submit the attendance waiver form (https://cpschools.jotform.com/243294514095055).

  •  Applications submitted by May 30 will receive a response by the end of the school year. The last day to submit an application is June 27.

  • Seniors who have an A- or above in the class are only exempt from traditional style exams (e.g., multiple choice, fill in the blank, etc.).Teachers may choose to have performance-based assessments, or PBAs (e.g., labs, student project presentations, etc.) during CA/exam times for the final culminating assessment. Seniors are not exempt from PBAs given during the CA/exam days.

  • The A- grade (90 or above) includes the PBAs in the CA category that students submitted throughout the semester.  The PBA grades from the semester in the CA category will be finalized by June 5. When looking at StudentVUE/ParentVUE, here is an example of a senior who would be exempt from a traditional exam:

The FG1 grade needs to be an A- or greater. In addition, the final culminating assessment category assignment given to students on exam day needs to be in a traditional exam format for the senior to be exempt.

Please Note

  • Attendance does count on the exam days.  Seniors who are at 9 days may be exempt from the exam but will need to attend class.

  • Students in Grades 9-11 are not exempt from CA/Exams.

Request for a modified CA/Exam Schedule

  • Requests for a modified exam must be approved by school administration. The Chesapeake Public Schools Academic Calendar (which includes culminating assessment dates) is made public each spring about 6 months prior to the beginning of the school year. Students are required to attend school and take relevant assessments on scheduled days. Requests for early assessments will only be granted for rare extenuating circumstances that are beyond the student's control (e.g., immediate family member's graduation or retirement ceremony, death in the family,  participation in national or state conferences, etc.) In most cases, if a student will be absent on assessment days, he/she will need to take the assessment AFTER the original date.

  • Please use this form to request a modification of the culminating assessment schedule Submit documentation supporting the need for modification. Applications without supporting documentation will not be approved.
