Our students aren’t just "googling"—they are digging deep into the CPS databases, hitting the library stacks, and conducting real-world interviews to find solutions for the future. From persuasive essays to persuasive action, these students are proving that a better world starts with a well-researched idea.

🌍 World Travelers (Without the Jet Lag!) 🌍
Our 6th grade World Language classes just wrapped up an incredible week-long takeover of the library! 📚✨
Working alongside our fantastic library team, students dove deep into the cultures, histories, and traditions of Spanish, German, and French-speaking countries. This wasn't just your average research project—it was a full-blown global expedition right here on campus.
🔍 What they worked on:
• Cultural Deep Dives: From the peaks of the Andes to the shores of the Ivory Coast and the forests of Bavaria.
• Collaborative Research: Students teamed up to find the "hidden gems" of their assigned nations.
• The Grand Finale: Each group took the stage to present their findings, sharing everything from local delicacies to unique holidays.
A huge thank you to the library staff for hosting us and helping our students sharpen those research skills. We are so proud of the curiosity and creativity these 6th graders showed!
We had an amazing day at our 4th Annual Teen Summit this past Saturday at Indian River High School! 🙌 We were honored to hear from former James Madison University All-Conference Running Back Dr. Eugene Holloman, who inspired students with a powerful message about perseverance and purpose. From mental health and money management to athletics, college prep, and stress management, our teens gained tools for success now and in the future. Thank you to our Department of Family & Community Engagement for organizing the event, and to our presenters, volunteers, and community members who made it such a success!

Mr. Sean Katz is deeply committed to excellence at Hugo Owens Middle
School. A firm but fair Physical Education teacher and an outstanding
wrestling coach, Mr. Katz is highly respected by students and staff alike.
His ability to build strong relationships allows students to gravitate
toward him while holding them to high expectations both in and out of
the classroom. Beyond teaching and coaching, Mr. Katz is an active member of the
Principal’s Advisory Committee, where he plays a key role in helping
shape the direction and culture of the school. A former Teacher of the
Year, he consistently gives his all to the HOMS community by mentoring
future educators and leading meaningful schoolwide initiatives.
One of Mr. Katz’s signature contributions is the Student vs. Staff
Basketball Game, a highly anticipated annual event that continues to
grow each year. This year’s event drew more than 400 attendees,
including students, staff, families, and volunteers, further highlighting his
ability to foster school spirit, unity, and positive relationships across the
community.
