Today, our 7th graders had the incredible opportunity to hear from civil rights activist Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, who joined us virtually to share her powerful story.
As a young college student in the 1960s, she became deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement—participating in sit-ins and joining the Freedom Riders to challenge segregation in the South. She was arrested in Mississippi and spent time in the notorious Parchman Penitentiary for standing up for equality and justice. Later, she became the first white student to enroll at Tougaloo College, a historically Black college in Jackson, Mississippi, continuing her work alongside other activists to push for change.
Our students were inspired by her courage, resilience, and commitment to making the world a more just place. Hearing firsthand experiences from someone who lived through this important period in history made the Civil Rights Movement come alive in a powerful way.
A huge thank you to Ms. Mulholland for sharing her time and wisdom with our students today! 🌟
