Meet Enrique Wiggins! Enrique is a rising senior at Grassfield working with the Communications Department. Enrique chose to participate in this internship because he wanted to learn more about PR strategy and more communications skills. 💻 He found it very fun, learned a lot, and met some very nice people. He has been doing some video editing, making promo videos, and conducting interviews but he feels it will become even more fun as time progresses. 🎥 🎤
He believes this was a good opportunity to take because of his interest in a career as a sports analyst. 🏀

Meet Amaris Reese! Amaris is a rising senior at Western Branch High School working with the Chesapeake Preschool Initiative. 🎒 She chose to participate in the Grow Our Own program to gain work experience and explore possible future career paths. She’s done a lot of organizational work including scanning and filing numerous documents. She has also admired seeing her coordinator and her co-workers come in to work with a positive attitude even in times of stress.



Meet Kayla Scott! Kayla is a rising senior working with the communications department👩💼. She chose to work with the communications department to learn more about different editing💻 softwares and to gain some work experience. Her favorite part has been meeting all the new people in the communications department and getting to work with them.

Meet Colbert Raleigh! Colbert is a rising junior at Great Bridge High School working with Strategic Planning 📝. Colbert decided to do this internship because he believed it would be a great learning experience with team building👥. He said his experience was amazing and his favorite part was the quiet work environment.

Meet Jayla Washington! Jayla is a rising senior at Western Branch working with Family👨👩👧👦 and Community Engagement. Jayla chose to participate in this internship because she had heard about the department before and wanted to get a better and deeper understanding of what they do. During her experience she was just as involved in meetings 🤝 and events as everyone else . She said that this opportunity reminded her how much she loves helping people and planning 📜 events.

Meet Sudiksha Mazumder! Sudiksha is a rising junior at Grassfield working with Strategic 🧩 Planning. Sudiksha said her experience was amazing. She learned a lot about the work that goes into planning 📝and making decisions that help the school district. She said it was wonderful working with everyone in her department and she had a good time working with the other interns. Teamwork and collaboration is a big part in this department and Sudiksha believes that her team has worked really well together to contribute to some projects.



🏥 Have you ever wondered what it would be like to take an ultrasound or even participate in an anatomy lab? Sevaral our students were able to do just that by participating in the 2024 Health Sciences Academy at Eastern Virginia Medical School! 🥼
Our students were joined by students from Portsmouth Public Schools and Northhampton Schools in a 2-week exploratory program that allowed students to learn about the different health sciences occupations and careers. It provided a knowledge of career building and technical skills to understand how to be successful in this industry. Students received hands-on experience through pathology, anatomy, physiology lab work, and suturing, and even traveled to Old Dominion University to practice speech therapy, dental hygiene, nursing, and more! This is our second year participating and our students loved it! 🎉

They have been working in this summer program by assisting the teachers 👩🏫 in their classrooms during CTE electives. They were able to meet amazing teachers, teacher assistants, and other CPS employees who have helped them throughout their experience. Their job was to travel from class to class with one group of students each week allowing them to get to know each student. One of their interns Ashlynn participated in this internship last year and enjoyed it so much that she chose to do it again! 😁



Meet Alison Cruz-Martinez! Alison is a rising senior at Grassfield working with Strategic Planning. Alison expressed that her experience as an intern was incredibly enriching and dynamic. She was involved in a variety of tasks, from researching 📚best practices in educational policy to assisting with the development of strategic initiatives aimed at improving student performance and school efficiency. She had the opportunity to attend meetings 👥where critical policy decisions were made and was able to contribute by preparing reports and analyzing 🧐data related to ongoing projects. Her favorite part of this experience was participating in the strategic planning sessions where new initiatives were discussed and developed.

Meet Katelynn Diehl! Katelynn is a rising senior at Great Bridge High School working with the Communications Department 👩💻. She decided to participate in this internship because she wanted to learn more about the communications field in hopes to pursue a career in Sports Journalism ⚾. Katelynn’s favorite part of her experience was getting to work on all the different kinds of projects like these social media posts.




Did you know that our “Grow Our Own” interns are not only getting hands-on experience and a paycheck 💵 but also take an online course to get high school credit?
Meet Rian Windham! Rian is a rising senior at Western Branch working with Student Activities. Rian chose this internship because he loves sports 🏀🏈⚽️⚾️ and wants to learn more about the department and the skills it acquires. His experience was filled with fun as he got to learn more about student activities, VHSL, and mental health. He believes this was a great way to explore future career paths in hopes to one day go into sports management or marketing. 📈
