Who knew Cheez-Its could make square roots click?

Skyhawks used Cheez-Its to build perfect squares and explore their relationship to square roots. Students could see that 1 × 1 = 1, 2 × 2 = 4, 3 × 3 = 9, and so on—then connect each perfect square to its square root!

Math + snacks = a recipe for learning!

The Shaka Hawks put their knowledge of cell organelles to the test with a delicious hands-on activity! Students created their own edible cells, choosing different candies to represent each organelle and explaining the function of each part.

Once their cells were complete—and their learning was demonstrated—it was time for the best part… enjoying their yummy creations! 😋🔬

Who knew cell biology could be this sweet? 🍭🧪

Our 8th-grade Dream Hawks are working together during a scientific investigation lab focused on measurement and SI units! Students are getting hands-on experience using metric rulers, graduated cylinders, balances, thermometers, and spring scales to collect and analyze data.

From measuring length and mass to exploring temperature and force, our Hawks are putting their science skills to work—one measurement at a time! 🦅📏

Three decades of memories. Thousands of students. Countless lessons, friendships, performances, games, celebrations, and moments that have shaped Hickory Middle School into the place it is today.

And while so much has changed over the years, one thing remains the same: our commitment to our Hawks and our community.

We are especially proud that four original HMS Hawks are still teaching and serving our students today!

She represents the very best of what an educator can be, and we are incredibly proud to name our 2026–2027 Teacher of the Year… Kaitlynn Peterson! ✨

Her impact reaches far beyond the classroom. For her students, she is a trusted mentor, a champion, and someone who makes every student feel seen and valued. Whether she’s creating engaging lessons, cheering from the sidelines, or co-leading student organizations, her message is always the same: You matter, and I’m in your corner.

To her colleagues, she is a true collaborator and leader—always willing to share, support, encourage, and lend a helping hand. Through her teaching, leadership, school spirit, and unwavering kindness, she makes HMS a brighter and better place to be.

Mrs. Cigich and Mrs. Carawan are SO incredibly proud of our amazing Hickory Hawks! Together, our school blew us away by donating a grand total of 789 boxes of cereal for our Cereal Wars drive!

Here is how the grade levels stacked up: 🏆 8th Grade: 403 boxes! 🥈 6th Grade: 262 boxes! 🥉 7th Grade: 124 boxes!

A huge shout out to our top team champions: 👑 1st Place: The Dream Hawks crushed it with 145 boxes! ⭐ 2nd Place: The Nighthawks were right on their heels with 144 boxes!

Since it was such a close race, the SCA is celebrating BOTH the Dream Hawks and the Nighthawks with a special Popcorn Bar! 🍿✨

Thank you to everyone who donated and showed what Hawk Pride is all about! You guys rock!

In Computer Science, our Hawks became magical programmers during the Niffler Treasure Roundup Challenge! 💎
Working in small groups, they used block code to program their Ozobot "Nifflers" to navigate a mat, collect scattered treasures, and return them to a drop zone within 30 seconds. Along the way, they practiced sequencing, direction, measurement, problem-solving, testing, and debugging. There were plenty of wrong turns - but just like real programmers, these Hawks adjusted their code and tried again! Way to SOAR! 🪄

Who says quiz review has to mean sitting quietly with a study guide? In this hands-on lesson, our Night Hawks worked in groups of 3–4 to create four celestial bodies using Play-Doh, colorful beads for different materials, and even salt for cosmic dust! 🌌

With guiding slides on the board, students collaborated, created, and put their knowledge to the test. And when it came time to model a meteor, one brave group member took learning to new heights—literally! 🚀 They traveled up to our ceiling-mounted Earth to demonstrate how a meteoroid becomes a meteor and ultimately a meteorite. ☄️

Hands-on learning, teamwork, creativity, and a little friendly competition make for one stellar review! 🌎⭐
